In late 1999, Eric Merlin, a young French entrepreneur, found a small box engraved with the word “Indochine” at a flea market in Paris. Inside were three postcards, one of which featured an image of the steamship “Emeraude” on Ha Long Bay. The mysterious scene and rich history sparked Eric’s curiosity, urging him to learn more about this legendary ship.
The Story of the Roque Family
After a long search, Eric uncovered the story of the Roque family—French settlers who lived and worked in Indochina in the late 19th century. The three Roque brothers, Victor, Xavier, and Henry, left their homeland for the Far East, driven by a spirit of adventure and a desire to explore new horizons. The Roque family built the first Emeraude ship in the early 20th century to transport goods and international tourists across Ha Long Bay.
The Revival of Emeraude Classic
After discovering the ship’s history, Eric Merlin decided to revive the legendary vessel. In 2003, a new version of the Emeraude Classic was launched, resembling the original steamship but equipped with modern amenities.
